We have signed QB Patrick Mahomes to a 10 year extension," the Chiefs said on Twitter on Monday. "Mahomes secured with Chiefs for the next 12 seasons."

Mahomes also said to Twitter to make sure  his new deal, posting a video of some of his best shots with the Chiefs, and wrote: "Here to stay...!"

Mahomes, who was put down at No 10 overall in 2017, had two years left on his contract having seen the Chiefs, unsurprisingly, opt to train his 5th-year option.

Chiefs maneger and CEO Clark Hunt said: "This is a significant moment for our franchise and for the Chiefs Kingdom.

And since he joined the Chiefs just a few years ago, Patrick improved into one of the most prolific athletes in all of sports. With his dynamic moves and infectious personality, he is the most recognised and idol figures to put on the Chiefs uniform.

"He's an extraordinary captain and a credit to the Kansas City society, and I'm delighted that he will be a member of the Chiefs for several years to come."

Chiefs main coach Andy Reid added: "I've had the privilege of training many of incredible athletes and special people in my life, and Patrick is with no doubt on that list of players.

The best part is he's still young in his career. He's a leader by nature and always grinding, whether that's on the field, in the weight room or watching film, he wants to be the best.

"He is a competitor and his team-mates feed off his strength. He makes us all better as a team and we are blessed he's going to be our quarterback for many years to come."

Mahomes, 24, is the youngest player in NFL history to make a victory of Super Bowl and league MVP, the latter coming after he threw for 5,097 passing yards and a league-high 50 touchdowns in 2018.

In 2019 he made it for 4,031 yards and 26 touchdowns, before throwing for 10 touchdowns in the post-season to take the Chiefs and the whole ream to Super Bowl glory.

His amazing playoff run involved five touchdowns to help the Chiefs overturn a 24-point deficit vs the Houston Texans in their Divisional Round matchup.

He registered 9,412 passing yards for 76 touchdowns and 18 interceptions in 31 regular-season games for now for the Chiefs, having sat behind Alex Smith for the majority of his rookie year. Mahomes also made 1,474 passing yards for 13 touchdowns and two interceptions in 5 career playoff games.
